"The Future of European Scriptwriting Education"
A discussion panel with Julian Friedmann (ScriptWriter Magazine and Blake Friedmann Literary, Film and Television Agency), Christopher Walker (De Montfort University), Stephan Ottenbruch (Sat.1) and others.
Scriptwriting and content development are issues of great concern in the film and TV industries in the EU. While the US industry seems to produce a constant flow of new material to feed the increasing global demand for its content, producers in the EU still appear unable to produce sufficient films and TV dramas to build sustainable industries and, as a result, they continue to suffer from a lack of industrial growth.
On the other hand there is the apparent difficulty faced by those who have studied scriptwriting to earn their living primarily from writing scripts.
A pilot project of the EU's Leonardo da Vinci Programme, ESPECTS has been set up to find out if there is a correlation between the different ways of teaching scriptwriting and the ability of those trained to become professional writers in different countries in the EU, earning most of their income from writing.
ESPECTS will look into the relationship of different approaches to studying scriptwriting and their effectiveness in terms of a measurable output of produced scripts.
Are there best practices in scriptwriting training? Should the training of writers be industry-led or academically-led? Do writers learn more writing for television than studying? Is the infinitely complex process of developing a script a cooperative process or not? And if it is, how could producers, directors, film-fund executives and other industry professionals be better integrated into the studying and teaching of scriptwriting? ESPECTS aims to provide hard evidence for a better way forward for European writers and producers.
The panel takes place on Friday the 7th October 2005, at 4.15 pm at Scriptforum in the “Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften”
